Fyre Festival 2 is still happening, organizers insist, after location change

The festival is currently looking for a new location after cancelling its plans for Playa Del Carmen.

Fyre Festival 2, the follow-up to the 2017 event that descended into chaos and subsequent fraud lawsuits, is no longer coming to Playa Del Carmen, but organizer Billy McFarland insisted in a statement to NBC News that the festival is still happening at some point.

Rumors began to swirl yesterday (April 16) when ticketholders received an email notifying them of the festival’s delay: “The event has been postponed and a new date will be announced. We have issued you a refund. Once the new date is announced, at that time, you can repurchase if it works for your schedule.”

Not long after these messages were publicized, a follow-up was sent stressing that the show was, in fact, still in production: “FYRE Festival 2 is still on. We are vetting new locations and will announce our host destination soon. Our priorities remain unchanged: delivering an unforgettable, safe, and transparent experience.”

The festival is scheduled to run from May 30 to June 2. Though no lineup has been announced (beyond disgraced football player Antonio Brown) and no location secured, McFarland left the door open for the festival proceeding in the same timeframe, telling NBC News that “the date is dependent on location.” As of press time, tickets are currently unavailable on the Fyre Festival website.

The return of Fyre Festival prompted immediate skepticism when McFarland announced it soon after his release from prison on wire fraud charges connected to the first Fyre. Originally scheduled to take place on Isla Mujeres in Mexico, local officials categorically denied that the event was taking place; Fyre Festival responded claiming that they were “in negotians” with the local government. Later the festival was announced for Playa Del Carmen, but the resort issued its own denial on April 2.
