Having established himself as one of the industry’s favorite featured artists, no matter the genre, Ty Dolla $ign is very careful and highly intentional with his solo body of work. In the game for over a decade now (his first mixtape House on the Hill, was released back in 2011), up until today, the musician had released just three solo studio albums; meanwhile, he’s appeared on roughly 500 tracks as a featured artist. After a few delays, his fourth, TYCOON, is here now, which finds Ty not only fully in the driver’s seat sonically, but also at his artistic apex.
Arriving (almost exactly) five years after his last solo studio project – Featuring Ty Dolla $ign, on October 23, 2020 – TYCOON takes a snapshot of Ty’s top spot as one of the most tapped-in and sonically versatile artists of the music zeitgeist. Across its 15 songs, the record hears Ty revel in the full circuit of his global fame, reflecting on all of the good and bad that comes with it.
Of course, he enlists some of the industry’s most coveted collaborators – just regulars in his rolodex – to contribute to the delivery. On the title track “TYCOONS,” fellow top dogs Young Thug and Future each hop on the track, with other assists coming from Travis Scott, Leon Thomas, Kodak Black, YG, and many others.
Ty’s rhythmic flexibility is on full display on TYCOON, with his electronic music influences particularly prominent on certain tracks like “HARDER,” while other tracks swerve between different pockets of R&B and rap.
