It takes a certain kind of diva to go out in New York City’s freezing winter temps in nothing but a crop top, mini skirt, and lace tights, but that’s exactly what Grace VanderWaal and Aliyah’s Interlude did while shooting the music video for their new song “Babydoll.” In the Sophie Hur-directed video, out today, February 28, they scurry around NYC in stilettos and show off a revolving door of scanty, Y2K-coded style inspo. It all brings to mind a certain aphorism Cardi B once said, and serves as some aspirational fuel for going harder when you get dressed in the morning.

“Babydoll” is VanderWaal’s first release of 2025 — and of a brand new era. The former America’s Got Talent winner and actress (who was just in Francis Coppola’s Megalopolis), released her last album in 2017, the indie pop-hued Just The Beginning. Years, and several loosies, later, she’s pivoted to more playful, capital-P pop sonics. “Babydoll” sounds like putting lipgloss on in the Uber to the club (with an energy-boosting verse from Aliyah’s Interlude) and is about “acting bratty, going out, wanting everything, and being a diva,” per Vanderwaal in a statement. “[Songwriter] Tiffany Stringer and I had the idea to write a song from our alter egos perspective. We named mine Baby Doll: who doesn’t like to be told no.”

The FADER: Tell me about working with Aliyah’s Interlude for this track — how did you guys get connected?

GRACE VANDERWAAL: I knew I wanted Aliyah on the song very very early. I just love her and had been admiring her career for a while, I reached out and played “Babydoll,” and the rest is history.

The looks from the video are all incredible. What was your favorite clothing item or accessory from the shoot?

I love when Aliyah is wearing that cheetah beret because it’s actually my personal accessory from my closet ❤️

“Babydoll” is about embracing your brattiness and “being a diva.” Can you rank your top 5 divas?
