Chappell Roan shares “The Giver,” her “lesbian country song”

Chappell Roan has finally released the studio version of “The Giver.” Scroll down to listen to the song below.

“The Giver” was debuted during Roan’s appearance on Saturday Night Live in November. She then began teasing an HQ version of the song last month via a hotline shared with fans that allowed them to call in and hear snippets of the track.

Speaking to Amazon Music in a recent interview, Roan described “The Giver” as her “lesbian country song.”

“I can’t call myself the Midwest princess and not acknowledge country music straight up,” she said. “That is what is around me in the grocery stores. That’s what is playing on the bus…I know that my heart really wanted to write a country song, and I’m trying to really articulate that it’s not me trying to cross genres and be like, ‘hey, you know, look at me.’ I’m not trying to convince a country crowd that they should listen to my music by baiting them with a country song. That’s not what I feel like I’m doing. I just think a lesbian country song is really funny, so I wrote that.”

Roan also said that this song does not mean her next album will be made up entirely of country songs. “Many people have asked if this means I’m making a country album???” she wrote on social media. “My answer is.. hmm right now I’m just making songs that make me feel happy and fun and The Giver is my take on cuntry xoxo may the classic country divas lead their genre, I am just here to twirl and do a little gay yodel for yall.”

“The Giver” is Roan’s first single since last year’s hit “Good Luck, Babe!” Her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess was released in September 2023. At this year’s Grammys, where she was named Best New Artist, Roan made headlines by calling on major labels to provide healthcare for the artists on their roster.
