The Los Angeles-based singer makes electronic songs sound like mini epics.
Los Angeles-based singer Valentina Cy only began uploading songs under the name Oxis in 2023 but has already released seven albums. That prolificness doesn’t seem to dampen her ability to create consistently innovative-sounding, soft-hearted love songs using just electronic bleeps and clipped guitar loops. Tracks like “Long Sardine” and “Baqui” show how sonically and emotionally effective her compositions can be even when they’re just two minutes long. And combined with the light oceanic theme of her music — all her songs boast fishy artwork and titles — she’s carving an intriguing niche for herself in the crowded landscape of DIY electronic pop.
On a chilly Halloween day in New York City, after wrapping up a stint opening for Magdalena Bay on tour, Oxis visited The FADER’s HQ in Dumbo, Brooklyn, for an intimate and stripped back performance of her songs “Fry” and “Piranha.” Armed with just her blue electric guitar, a looper, and mic, she proved the adage less is more. Watch her live performance above.
Oxis is due to drop her eighth studio album, Oxis 8, on January 26, and has released the new song “Guili.” See more photos of Oxis from her FADER visit, below, and read her interview for The Opener.
